Starfish Malawi Links
At St Mary's, we believe that is fundamental for children to develop an understanding of the wider world that they are part of. Global citizenship education helps our children to become more aware of world issues, such as climate change, diversity, justice and equality.
We are very fortunate to have developed a link with a school in Kapira, Malawi. This link has been established through the charity Starfish Malawi (please click the image below to find out more about Starfish).
“Through global citizenship education, young people are able to solve problems, make decisions, think critically, communicate ideas effectively and work well with others. This not only helps them personally and educationally but eventually professionally as well... It will help them to participate in both their local and wider communities and understand how their actions can make a positive difference to others.” Starfish Malawi
Every year group at St Mary's learns about various aspects of Malawi; from animals, food and water to climate, education and sanitation.
We also communicate with our link school, via What's App, to share information about our schools and communities. We are hoping to establish this link even further this academic year.
In the summer of 2021, we held a Malawi Day and took part in a fun run to raise money to help our link school buy Tippy Taps. Tippy Taps help people to wash their hands in a Covid secure way. We even had a go at making our own Tippy Tap as part of the Starfish Malawi Clean Hands Project.
